SLOVAK PRESS PHOTO 2017 Winners Announced!

The official results of the 6th year of SLOVAK PRESS PHOTO have just been announced at the awards ceremony at Primate’s Palace in Bratislava on 19 October 2017.

The submitted works were judged by a 5-member international jury which met on 02–04 September 2017 in Bratislava. The jury had the following members: Nina Berman (US) – jury chair, Jana Hojstričová (SK), Jindřich Štreit (CZ), Bénédicte Kurzen (FR) and Roman Vondrouš (CZ).

The contest in numbers: 185 photographers submitted a total of 2,055 pictures in 10 contest categories: News, Reportage, Daily Life, Portrait, Sports, Nature, The World of Art, Students and Young Photographers up to 25 Years (international category), Central European Photography (international Category), and Grant of the City of Bratislava. The SLOVAK PRESS PHOTO 2017 exhibition shows a total of 229 pictures.

A separate video jury composed of Pavol Barabáš (SK) – jury chair, Zdeněk Šámal (CZ) and Tomáš Stanek (SK) judged the works entered in the Short Video international category and awarded honourable mention to Tomáš Rafa and his video on the anti-fascist blockade of the “Brno Blocks” Initiative against the 1st May march of right-wing extremists.

The international categories were open to photographers and video-makers from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Austria, Ukraine and Slovenia.

As noted by jury chair Nina Berman, “across categories, Slovak photographers are using photography to communicate essential truths and contradictions about contemporary society, through images of popular protest, surveillance and security, love, identity, family, and the environment. Photographers are building on the long standing traditions of black and white closely seen intimate photography, as well as riskier, more interpretative approaches, using colour, portraiture, and more conceptually crafted narratives.”

The Grand Prix was awarded to freelance photographer Andrej Belovežčík and his photograph Prague 2017, Old-Town Square.

The Bratislava Grant, awarded by the Mayor of the Capital City on the basis of a photo project, was obtained by Olja Triaška Stefanović and her series New Bratislava.

The Young Talent of the Year prize was given to Soňa Maletz.

Visitors can see the awarded pictures in the Old Town Hall of the Museum of the City of Bratislava and Justi Hall of the Primate’s Palace in Bratislava from 20 October to 30 November 2017.

All winning pictures are also published on our website www.slovak-press-photo.sk.
