THE PEKING 2022 WINTER OLYMPC GAMES AS SEEN BY PHOTOGRAPHER ROMAN VONDROUŠ The XXIV. Winter Olympic Games took place in Beijing, China. It became the first city in history to host both Summer and Winter Olympic Games. These Winter Games in Beijing were described as a next “COVID Olympics”, after the Summer Games in Tokyo in 2021. The athletes, organizers, journalists and volunteers had to stay closed in a “bubble”, cut off from the local population due to the fears of Covid-19 spreading. Coronavirus suits with face shields, daily PCR testing with body temperature measurements, protective fences and quarantine hotels. All this and much more was a part of the elaborate and extremely strict measures that were supposed to ensure a smooth run of the event. In addition to the Chinese capital, some of the sport events also took place in the city of Yanqing and Zhangjiakou where, for example, the biathlon and cross-country skiing competitions were accompanied by an inclement weather. The combination of high altitude, severe frosts and strong winds caused several athletes to collapse.

The jury has decided to award the main Grand Prix prize for a series of photographs entitled Situation at the Vyšné Nemecké Border Crossing the Day After the Start of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine to the photographer of the SME daily newspaper, Mark Erd. Commenting on the winning photograph, jury chairman Kadir van Lohuizen said: „ The overall winner of the competition presents that this year´s events in Ukraine are to some extent a reality that has affected us all. The situation is not easy even in the Netherlands, where thousands of refugees from Ukraine are arriving and have nowhere to sleep” Kadir van Lohuizen describes the situation related to Ukraine, and Jana Garvoldtová adds: „The Grand Prix photographs capture not only the social and political consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, but also the human story behind this tragedy. Western countries have always been willing to help. They have been more open in dealing with migration. The situation in Ukraine has also made Eastern Europe open to help, and we feel a shift in our perception of said help”.

A special prize, the Bratislava 2022 Grant, was awarded to a series of photographs, The Harbour Bridge, by Tomáš Hrivňák working for the N daily newspaper. The theme of this year´s Bratislava Grant is „Bratislava – A City with Better Public Space”. The winner receives €2 000 for a year-long project aimed at photographing changes in Bratislava.

Peter Korček: Bratislava – a city at the confluence of two rivers

In this documentary photographic project, I explore the Danube and Morava rivers as inseparable parts of Bratislava and its surroundings. Their condition is a direct reflection of long-term human activity and the climate changes we are all witnessing: last years floods and this extremely dry summer. Many are building their temporary or more permanent homes on the banks and their lives are closely linked to the rivers. The two rivers also form Slovakia natural border with Austria and the Czech Republic. Not so long ago, the banks of these rivers were lined by an Iron Curtain that separated us from the civilised Western world for many decades. The traces of communist terror are slowly and quietly growing into the landscape.

Peter Korček (1980) is a photographer, teacher and PhD student at the Institute of Creative Photography at the Faculty of Philosophy and Science of Silesian University in Opava. In his free work, he deals with documentary photography. He focuses mainly on exploring the relationships between urban man and the environment that surrounds him and which he shapes through his activities. Professionally, he has worked for over fifteen years as a photojournalist in various Slovak publishing houses. He has exhibited in Slovakia and abroad and has won several awards for his work in the Slovak Press Photo and Czech Press Photo competitions.
