SLOVAK PRESS PHOTO Contest Launches Its 9th Edition!

The SLOVAK PRESS PHOTO photojournalism contest is entering its 9th edition with updated contest categories, rules and with a new jury.

The jury members for this year are Pep Bonet, Spanish photographer and filmmaker from the photo agency NOOR, Maciek Nabrdalik, Polish documentary photographer, member of the photo agency VII, prof. Jindřich Štreit, Czech photographer and pedagogue, Roman Vondrouš, Czech photographer and multiple Czech Press Photo competition award winner and doc. Jan Hojstričová, Slovak photographer, pedagogue and Vice-Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, who is also the project supervisor. The change compared to previous years is in the chairmanship of the jury. This year, the jury elects its chairman on the first day of the evaluation.

Slovak photographers working for mass media can enter their works in the following categories: News,
Reportage, Portrait, World of Art and Culture, Environment and Nature, and Sports, as well as the
special Bratislava Grant category. The international categories Students and Young Photographers up to 26
Years
, Daily Life and Long-Term Document are open to authors from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary,
Austria, Slovenia
and Ukraine. The topic of the new international category Mobile Phone Photography is
“Challenging year”.

The jury will judge the entries based on the rules introduced in previous year. It will select 4 nominees in each
category (singles and series) and decide about the winners of the category who will receive the prize from the
partner of the category. The nominees will be announced at the latest one week before the awards ceremony.
The exhibition will present both the winning and nominated pictures. The jury can award the Grand Prix not only for a single, but also for a series.

The special category Bratislava Grant is held under the auspices of the Mayor of the Capital City of Bratislava, Mr Matúš Vallo. The winner of this category, proposed by the jury and selected by the Mayor of Bratislava, will
receive a grant of €2,000 for photographing the transformations of Bratislava.

The jury will award the Young Talent of the Year prize to a Slovak photographer – student up to 26 years, who will raise the jury’s attention, while taking into consideration his/her previous works. The prize will be handed over to the winner by the Mayor of Bratislava – Old Town, Ms Zuzana Aufrichtová. In addition, the SLOVAK PRESS PHOTO Foundation will organise a solo exhibition for the winner of this prize.

Compared to the previous editions, the organiser made the contest rules stricter. The entrants will be required to provide basic information about their entries so that to observe the principles of good journalism and to comply with the requirements to prevent any manipulation with the original content of their images.

The registration will be available at www.slovak-press-photo.sk from 03 June 2020. The deadline for applications is 25 August 2020.

The international jury will meet in Bratislava on 30 August02 September 2020.

The awards ceremony will be held on 01 October 2020 in Bratislava, and the awarded works will be exhibited at
Dom umenia (House of Art) at Nám. SNP 12 in Bratislava.

As part of the tradition of organising exhibitions of the jury members, we will open an exhibition for one of the jury members, Pep Bonet in Bratislava. An exhibition for the second jury member, Polish photographer Maciek Nabrdalik, will be opened on 29.10.2020.
